The start of the journey

"Raw Vegan?" A countless number of people in the last week have sounded pretty confused when I mention that I am trying this way of eating for a while. "Can you eat sushi?" is a common query. Ummm....sushi has cooked rice in it!

Welcome to the world of raw veganism. Truth is, I have had some experience with it before, spending a week in North Yorkshire (UK) on a raw vegan food retreat. Basically, it involves eliminating all animal products from your diet (the vegan part) and not heating anything you eat or drink above 48 degrees celsius (the raw part). Surprisingly, its not as hard as it sounds!

The idea behind this way of eating is that cooking destroys the micro-nutrients found in food, effectively "killing" the food that you eat. Therefore, we would all be much healthier and happier individuals with less instance of disease, if we all adhered to a raw vegan lifestyle. Now, I don't necessarily believe that this is true in all cases - there is plenty of evidence to suggest that certain foods need to be cooked to release some of their important health properties to the body. However, it is definitely undeniable that in today's society we could all do with eating a lot more fresh and unprocessed fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds (the basis of the raw vegan diet).

On the quest to rescue my body from a post holiday season melt-down, I started on a raw vegan diet. Just for a while, just to see how I go. I know I felt a lot healthier and a lot more alive when I was on the diet in North Yorkshire, and am hoping that I can replicate that feeling back home in Sydney from my own kitchen. As an added benefit, there should be some weight loss (not that weight loss is my real goal in all of this). The husband will be accompanying me for some of the journey! Along the way I will post some pictures, some recipes and some insights into the raw vegan deal. And undoubtedly, I will have some interesting stories to share!
